Humana People to People India has got an immense pleasure of being announced the winner for exemplary work in promoting hygiene among school children. The award has been given by Lifebuoy, a unit of Hindustan Unilever Limited under National Child Health Awards 2009. More than 100 NGOs participated in this competition based on 5 key factors influencing child health – Nutrition, Hygiene, Education, Physical Environment and Socio-Psychological Environment. The winners were chosen by an advisory board out of 119 entries from all over the country. On 04th September 2009, Humana People to People India was announced as winner under “Lifebuoy Child Health Award- Hygiene” and was awarded a sum of Rs. 51,000.
The award winning project worked with school children in 100 government schools in 4 districts of Uttar Pradesh to ensure that all children have safe & sustainable water sources, proper sanitation facilities, hygiene education and joyful learning environment. The project encouraged community participation for maintaining and looking after safe water supply and sanitation for the children. The project formed Child Cabinets in order to make school children responsible for maintaining hygiene inside and around the schools. The project also practiced waste management by digging waste pits with participation from school children. This was done for proper disposal of waste and awareness generation among school staff, students and the community. The 6 months project was supported by UNICEF and was implemented on 15th September 2008. The project completed its activities on 31st March 2009.
