Clean and affordable energy is crucial for sustainable social and economic development. Lack of energy impedes reach and impact of basic services like education, livelihood, education and healthcare and adversely affects the quality of life.
With a rapidly growing nation of more than a billion, India is facing an enormous electricity crunch. More than 72% population of India is living in villages and about half of them remain without electricity. Energy conservation and renewable energy are pertinent factors in stabilizing economies and ensuring equity. With India favorably located near the equator, solar power generation is an optimum solution to meet this surging energy demand of overgrowing population.
Acting upon the identified problem of erratic or lack of electricity supply in the rural villages, Humana People to People India establishes solar mini grids and solar charging station in impoverish villages of India. Main aim of this program is to spread awareness about the benefits of solar energy, install solar charging stations and solar mini grids, train self help groups regarding running and maintenance of solar stations and educate rural community on the environmental benefits of solar energy and its burgeoning need and importance in India.
HPPI aims to create partnerships between entities among government and civil society institutions that can help to efficiently accelerate and expand utilization of renewable energy devices and services all over India.
Solar energy generated is used for several purposes of heating, drying, cooking or electricity by villagers. Solar Energy projects of HPPI have reached out to 100 villages across Uttar Pradesh in collaboration with TERI, GAIA and USAID. Currently the program has established 20 solar mini grids, one in each of the 20 model villages, in partnership with TERI under ‘Lighting a Billion Lives’ program in Karahal block of Sheopur district, Madhya Pradesh. The mini-grids are providing illumination to 900 households, which facilitate education of children, better illumination, smoke free indoor environment to women for household chores and increased opportunities for livelihood after sunset.
To address the persisting problem of frequent and prolonged power cuts which affect both livelihood and life of people, solar energy initiatives which provide an environmentally friendly and inexhaustible source of energy are paramount.
