Clean and affordable energy is crucial for sustainable social and economic development. Lack of energy impedes reach and impact of basic services like education, livelihood, education and healthcare and adversely affects the quality of life. Humana People to People India (HPPI) in cooperation with public and private partners implements renewable energy projects in the areas of solar energy and biogas.

Half a million premature deaths and nearly 500 million cases of illness are estimated to occur annually, due to exposure to smoke emissions from biomass used by households in India, making indoor pollution the third leading health risk factor.

Biogas plants provides clean fuel for cooking and lighting purposes, organic manure to households, mitigates drudgery of rural women and reduces deforestation. Over the years HPPI has facilitated construction of 790 Biogas plants across states of Rajasthan and Haryana, directly impacting more than 4500 people.

Currently a project is implemented in Dausa, Rajasthan, to construct 200 biogas plants over two years. Additionally the project organises farmers clubs and women’s self help groups, as well as training in animal husbandry for improved livelihood.

Solar energy

More than 72% of India’s population is living in villages and about half of them remain without electricity. With India favorably located near the equator, solar power generation is an optimum solution to meet this surging energy demand of an overgrowing population.

HPPI works to make solar energy solutions available at village level, with special focus on women. Currently solar lamps are promoted and sold at low prices through HPPI”s microfinance branches, enabling the women beneficiaries to continue their livelihood activities after dark.

Over the years HPPI has trained and equipped solar women entrepeneurs in villages in Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, and set up solar mini grids and charging stations in villages in Rajasthan.
