The Urban Green Movement project was launched in 2016, as a result of collaboration a between HPPI and ‘College for International Cooperation and Development’, England (CICD), to promote sustainable food production and environmental awareness in urban areas. Every year, a team of ‘Climate Activists’ from CICD joins HPPI’s projects for 5 months to implement various green initiatives.

A central element of the Urban Green Movement is to promote organic urban gardening, utilizing local, easily available and budget friendly resources. Availability of organically grown food is scarce in urban areas, and often sold expensively in high-end markets, leaving majority of the population to consume food heavily treated with pesticides. Building urban gardens and teaching the community how to grow food, empowers them to take charge of their own nutrition and at the same time decrease their carbon footprint.

Currently the Climate Activist team is setting up gardens with Out-of-School children in Kadam Centres and their local communities and schools in Gurugram, Haryana. The gardens are constructed from barrels and palettes, using the permaculture method to cultivate crops. Permaculture is a method uses intercropping to create a natural system of plant protection and nutrition.
