The 2nd cycle of Humana People to People India’s Reading Intervention in 3 districts of Madhya Pradesh supported by READ Alliance has been concluded in July '17.

The intervention in the HPPI-READ Alliance project is implemented through HPPI’s flagship Kadam – Step-Up Programme, which is designed to address learning gaps found in a varied age group of children within the same classroom. It uses a combination of 10 Steps for learning subject-based competencies and Theme Learning for all-round skills building. The learning is child-oriented, activity-based as well as outcome-based.

Through weekly intervention by HPPI’s 12 Reading Facilitators, 210 Primary School Teachers have been trained in Child-centered Methodologies through using The Kadam – Step-Up Programme. During the Intervention 5,137 Primary School Students participated in Teaching and Activities delivered by the Reading Facilitators together with the Primary School Teachers with an ultimate aim of improving learning outcomes in reading and writing in these Primary School students.

The intervention under the READ Alliance partnership is being carried over a period of two years in three districts of Madhya Pradesh, namely, Dewas, Ujjain and Khandwa. It covers approximately 200 primary schools, working with 1,000 primary school teachers and 30,000 students from grades 1-5.

The intervention is structured in seven consecutive time periods of 10 weeks each, involving a different batch of on average 4,500 children (a ‘cohort’) and their teachers in each period.
