Humana People to People India (HPPI) is pleased to announce that it has been selected as an official member of the Million Lives Club, an initiative that celebrates innovators and social entrepreneurs who are scaling impact in improving the lives of those living on less than US $5 a day.

HPPI has been selected as one of the first Million Lives Club Pioneer Members for its Kadam Step Up Programme that reintegrates out of school children (OOSC) to formal education system while ensuring the retention of those students who are at risk of dropping out. HPPI and the Kadam Programme are Scale Leaders selected and recommended to the Million Lives Club by ReachScale, a global network that identifies and supports the most scalable solutions for social challenges.

According to a 2014 survey conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India survey, there are an estimated 6 million OOSC in India, and many enrolled students drop out in their primary grades due to various reasons. HPPI’s Kadam Step Up Programme successfully mainstreams OOSC through accelerated bridge education while simultaneously building the capacity of the state’s educational resources. The Kadam programme also incorporates efforts by the parents and the community to ensure students’ continued retention in school.

“There is a global learning crisis where the World Bank estimates that nearly 800 million children will not know how to read in 2030 if we do nothing to change the current trends,” says Snorre Westgaard, CEO, Humana People to People India.

“Children need school environment and methodologies that enable them to learn at their individual pace and achieve age-appropriate learning, so they can build the foundational skills that are necessary for life-long learning. The Kadam Step Up Programme is providing such methodologies for out of school children as well as for children at risk at dropping out. In partnerships with the State Governments of Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and Jammu and Kashmir, this programme can, with additional support, reach scale and change the lives of millions of children.”

The Million Lives Club is comprised of three cohorts of innovators and social entrepreneurs who are improving the lives of those living on less than $5 a day:

  • MLC Vanguard: Celebrates those who have directly impacted 1,000,000+ clients with their innovations
  • MLC Voyager: Recognizes innovations expected to impact 1,000,000+ clients within 18 months
  • MLC Pioneer Highlights innovations that have scaled to meet the needs of 40%+ of their target populations.

The Million Lives Club seeks to nurture innovation ecosystems by recognizing innovators and social entrepreneurs whose innovations have scaled to serve one million customers, or are rapidly approaching this milestone. The Million Lives Club is an initiative inspired by members of the International Development Innovation Alliance (IDIA) and supported by a growing partnership of leading development organizations.

The Million Lives Club operates an open application window, accepting applications on a rolling basis. Innovators and social entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply via millionlivesclub.org.
