International Women's Day (IWD), celebrated on March 8, is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. The first National Woman's Day was observed in the United States on February 28. The Socialist Party of America designated this day to commemorate the 1908 garment workers' strike in New York, where women protested against the harsh industrial working conditions. Over the following years, IWD became the day when groups and organisations came together demanding women’s right to vote, hold public office, work, receive vocational training and to end gender discrimination.

In 1945, the Charter of the United Nations was signed which became the first international agreement to affirm the principle of equality between women and men. In 2015, countries adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Goal 5 is “Achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls”.

This year the theme for IWD is “Think equal, build smart, innovate for change”. To celebrate the day and put the spotlight on the need to provide equal opportunities and aid to women and girls globally, different projects of Humana People to People India (HPPI) organised various events.
In the Pandhana block of Khandwa, Madhya Pradesh, an awareness rally was organised by the women who were trained in computer-based functional literacy under the Nai Disha project. The participating women displayed their certificates and shared that they feel empowered because now they can read and write.

Many employees shared their key message for women and men on IWD and reminded us how change is definitely being made, but we still have a long way to go and the goal towards equal opportunities and empowerment is yet to be achieved.
