Tuberculosis (TB) has now conclusively emerged as a leading public health challenge. In 2015, India accounted for nearly 27% of the 10.4 million new TB cases in the world, and 29% of the 1.8 million TB deaths globally.

Through The Union’s Axshya project, being implemented by Humana People to People India (HPPI) in nine districts of Delhi, we are reaching out to lakhs of residents through door-to-door awareness and detection campaigns. It was, however, realized that the reach of such information drives can be enhanced exponentially by sensitizing the staff of all HPPI Community Development (CDP) and Health Projects on ways of integrating TB detection and community sensitization in these projects.

In order to achieve this, in June 2017, a training session was organized at the HPPI national headquarters in Delhi where project leaders from all the CDP and health projects participated in an orientation session conducted by the HPPI resource person and Public Health expert Dr. Sugata Mukhopadhyay.  All the participating project leaders were made aware of the severity of the situation and the need for conducting information sessions with the project beneficiaries.

With such interventions, HPPI aims to increase the rate of TB identification by promoting community ownership in line with civil society-led public health programming model.
