On November 20, 1989, world leaders came together and made a historic commitment to the world’s children of the world. They made a promise to protect and fulfil the rights of every child by adopting an international legal framework – the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Convention says childhood is separate from adulthood and lasts until 18; it is a special, protected time, in which children must be allowed to grow, learn, play, develop and flourish with dignity. The Convention went on to become the most widely ratified human rights treaty in history and has helped transform children’s lives.

2019 marks the 30-year anniversary of the adoption of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC). The CRC is an important agreement by countries who have promised to protect children’s rights. The CRC continues to help us understand the needs of the children, their rights and the responsibilities of the government towards securing them.

To mark the anniversary and celebrate World Children’s Day, Humana People to People India’s Action Against Child Labour Project (AACL) organised an awareness rally in Panipat, Haryana. The rally was flagged off by Municipal Councillors Ms Anita Prithi, Mr Anil Bajaj and Ms Anjali Sharma.

The event saw the presence of several social dignitaries and around 600 community members including 250 students of the Sambhavana school run by HPPI under the project. Till date, the AACL project has successfully freed 965 children from unlawful labour and integrated them in the education system.

The AACL Project, being implemented in partnership with the Dutch organisation, Sympany, aims to create Child Labour Free Zones in Panipat, Haryana, starting within an approximate target population of 10,000 people in three wards of Panipat district, covering the areas of Jyoti Colony, Wadhava Ram Colony, Vikas Nagar and Noorwala, covering 2,439 households. The project team identifies the children and then either enrol them into a mainstream school or one of HPPI-run Sambhavana schools where their academic and social competencies are built up before they are enrolled in a formal school.
