The International Labour Organization (ILO) launched the World Day Against Child Labour (WDACL) in 2002 to focus attention on the global extent of child. Since then, every year on June 12, people around the world come together to highlight the issue of child labour and ways to remedy it. As per latest data, there are 152 million children around the world employed as labourers in textile factories, mining, agriculture, roadside stalls and as domestic help.

This year, the theme for WDACL was ‘Children shouldn’t work in fields, but on dreams!’

Humana People to People India’s Action Against Child Labour (AACL) project in Panipat, Haryana in partnership with the Dutch organisation, Sympany, aims to create Child Labour Free Zones, starting within an approximate target population of 10,000 people in three wards of Panipat district, covering the areas of Jyoti Colony, Wadhava Ram Colony, Vikas Nagar and Noorwala, covering 2,439 households. The project team identifies the children and then either enrols them into a mainstream school or one of HPPI-run Sambhavana schools where their academic and social competencies are built up before they are enrolled into a formal school.

To observe the WDACL and raise awareness, the AACL project organised an awareness event, graced by the chief guest, Hon'ble Member of Parliament for Karnal, Sanjay Bhatia, alongside Ms. Helle Lund, Head National and International CSR Projects, HPPI and Mr. Surya Verma, Project Coordinator, HPPI. The project team, along with community members and students, took out rallies from different wards of the district, followed by a motivating speech by the chief guest at the event.

HPPI also started an online-fundraising campaign which will support in transforming the life of over 3,000 out-of-school children, some of whom were earlier working in textile factories of Panipat, Haryana.
