Climate change is an impending global disaster. Above and beyond the initiatives taken by the global political leaders, children and the youth across the world are now increasingly taking a leadership role to protect and preserve their future on this planet.

In August 2018, a 16-year-old Swede, Greta Thunberg, led a people’s movement called the ‘Fridays for Future’ where school students across countries participated in strikes by not going to schools on Fridays and protest against the use of fossil fuels amongst other things that cause climate change.

A year later, over 150 countries across the world came together on September 20 to support young climate activists and demand an end to the age of fossil fuels.

In the run up to the big day, Humana People to People India's staff in Nalanda, Bihar in partnership with the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) organised a three-day workshop from September 17-19 following the theme ‘Fridays for Future’. The aim of the workshop was to promote the use of cloth bags and to stop using polybags which are harmful to the land and oceans and are non-biodegradable. During the three-day event, student-teachers of first and second year created a total of 817 cloth bags using old, discarded clothes and bedsheets.

On the following Friday, September 20, the student-teachers along with HPPI and DIET staff distributed the handmade bags amongst students of Grade 1 and 2 from 12 selected schools in the Noorsarai block of Nalanda. This was followed by a rally by the student-teachers in communities across 12 villages where approximately 1,750 people participated and spread further awareness!

The participating student-teachers also organised a painting workshop for the school students based on the theme of climate change in which students drew paintings with the messages that they need fresh air and water instead of fast cars and multi-storied malls.
