January 24 is recognised as the International Day of Education, a date proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in 2018 to emphasise the significance of education and its centrality to human well-being and sustainable development. This International Day, several of HPPI projects organised events to celebrate the day and raise awareness on this year’s theme for the day – learning for people, planet, prosperity and peace.

In HPPI’s NeTT Programme, implemented at the District Institute of Education and Training (DIET) in several states, student-teachers and staff came together to celebrate the day and raise awareness on the importance of education and its relation to sustainable development. Together, they organised awareness rallies and made posters to educate the community on the three R’s (reduce, reuse and recycle). They also pledged and motivated people to volunteer for clean-ups and choose sustainable development.

While the student-teachers led the rallies, DIET Principal and staff reflected on the importance of education, especially for girls. Community members, as well as students, came together to present song performances and nukkad natak (street play) on the theme ‘Learning for people, planet, prosperity and peace’. The student-teachers also presented speeches and poems to spread awareness on education, peace and development.

Simultaneously at HPPI’s Kadam Centres for out-of-school children, students along with their parents and Kadam staff, exhibited posters they had prepared on the importance of education and parents also shared their thoughts on the same.

In 15 Kadam centres in Ambala district of Haryana, HPPI organised drawing, writing and sports competitions where students, as well as their parents, participated with great enthusiasm. Students were also presented with prizes as part of various competitions held in these events.
