HPPI extends support to state departments in COVID-19 vaccination drives

In the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, one of the ways to fight the virus is if everyone across the globe gets vaccinated. Contributing to efforts of the government to get people vaccinated in the age group of 45+, followed by 18–44-year-olds, HPPI is extending its support to the state health departments under several Community Development Projects. Project staff who are also qualified nurses under CDP Ranga Reddy, Telangana and CDP Baddi in Himachal Pradesh are conducting COVID vaccinations and routine immunisation camps for pregnant women and children at the health sub-centres. Staff nurses under the CDP Baddi project are helping in vaccinating around 160-180 people every day and are also providing awareness and counselling through telecommunication about following precautions, home isolation, caring for COVID-positive patients and helping people in getting admission in hospitals & COVID care centres.

So far, more than 2,000 people have been vaccinated under the initiative by the project staff nurses. The Government Medical Staff has also trained two project nurses from HPPI’s CDP Baddi team to allow them to independently organise and run these camps. Similarly, in the Community Development Project in Aurangabad, Maharashtra, four of the project staff, who are also qualified nurses, are supporting the state health department in vaccinating around 50-80 people daily.

While vaccinating all is key in fighting COVID-19, many people in rural areas are still unaware or are facing challenges to access vaccines. Under HPPI’s Community Development Projects in Maheshwari, Haryana; Thane, Maharashtra; South 24 Parganas, West Bengal and Annedodi, Karnataka, project team members are mobilising the community with information and through technological aid to get appointments, raise awareness about vaccines and training the youth on the registration process. Between May 10 and 11, more than 128 people have been counselled, 257 people in the 45+ age group have been successfully vaccinated and 53 people in the 18-44 age group have registered for the vaccine in the project intervention area.
