Incorporating STEAM in teacher-training

Incorporating STEAM in teacher-training

STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. The inclusion of the Arts in the STEM framework is known as STEAM education, which is an approach to learning with the use of science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics. STEAM education helps teachers and students to use creative, constructive and critical teaching-learning approaches.

Recently, HPPI facilitated a two-day workshop on STEAM education which was attended virtually by 40 teacher-educators and the Necessary Teacher Training (NeTT) faculty members from five District Institutes of Education and Training (DIETs) of Uttar Pradesh.

The workshop included discussions, practice actions and presentations in five small groups.

The basic idea behind the workshop was to introduce various methods and practices of STEAM and inspire students to replace the rote learning method with a constructive method of teaching-learning so the students can develop their knowledge, research ability and develop various skills. The participants worked on various applications of STEAM and found the workshop very creative and useful.

Similar workshops will also be organised in other states where HPPI works in the DIETs and STEAM education will be incorporated in the teaching-learning methods of HPPI’s NeTT and other education Programmes.

HPPI has an MoU with the Department of School Education in Uttar Pradesh for improving the quality of education and achieves impact at scale in learning levels in Government Primary Schools in India in a sustainable and replicable manner.

The Project, Kadam+(UP25), is supported by RIST – Rural India Support Trust for a period of five years and aims at benefitting 14,740 teachers and 3,62,000 students.

Currently, we are working in 6 DIETS with pre-service of primary school teachers and also holding workshops with in-service teachers across six districts – Gorakhpur, Meerut, Prayagraj, Jhansi, Jaunpur and Siddharth Nagar.
